Catching up, part 2…

In late May, shortly after arriving back in Michigan, I took part in a group photo shoot at Collingwood Arts Center in Toledo, OH.  I’ve just uploaded photos from my four favorite shoots of the day… Sitha Lam, my good pal Beau, Latacha, and Kayleigh Marie Studer.

Off the Wall post mortem

Monday, October 12th, 2009

Getting to posting this a little late, but I was in LA for a week. Anyway, I wanted to share some pics from the “Off the Wall” art show. It went well. I met some really awesome people and got a much bigger display area at this show (4×8ft). I spraypainted a neon pink, yellow, green & silver background of “asa no ha” pattern, over which resided eight large prints. In other news, while at the show, I met Charlie Jane Anders from io9.com while at the show, and she featured my work on the site the following week. That was pretty rad! (I was also in the week recap)

Let’s see what else is new… I’m tabling for my fourth year in a row at APE this coming week, but more on that in my next post…

hello again

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

I want to take a moment and say hello to all the new folks coming to my site!  Many thanks to Chris at Space Gallery and Charlie Jane at io9.com for spreading the word.

Take a look around, and I hope you enjoy what you see.

If you are interested in buying prints of any of the pieces you see here, please send me an email at skeletron (at) gmail (dot) com.  Prints are in various sizes from $30 – $100, and I’d be happy to discuss specifics over email!

Off the Wall

Monday, September 21st, 2009

Hey kids, just wanted to let you know that I’m going to be in another art show, this coming Friday at Space Gallery in San Francisco

“Off the Wall”
Friday, September 25th, 8pm-late
admission $5
Space Gallery (1141 Polk St, btwn Sutter & Post)

I’ll have a bigger presence at this one than I did at Beyond Recognition. I’ll have about eight prints in the show, all pretty big size. One of the pieces is a brand new one that I just finished about 20 minutes ago. I’m not going to post it on this site until after the show, so it’ll be a surprise if you make it in person!

Beyond Recogniton post-mortem

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

The Beyond Recognition show went well for me. I showed eight pieces, and sold half of them. Yayy! It’s looking like I will be a part of the follow-up show, happening in September. I’ll keep you posted…  It was a fun show. My 15 year old nephew was visiting me for a few days, from Michigan, so it was cool to expose him to some good artists. In addition to 2D pieces, there was some sculptural work, as well as fashion, and some bands played. Lots of people showed up – maybe about 200-300. Here are a few shots from the evening (click the pics to go to their respective Flickr pages with bigger views):

My bit of wall space

These fine folks from Jubilee Hair Studio bought four of my pieces!

I loved this girl’s art. Check out her art.

Kelli posing with her art. Nice girl who makes good art.

Dunno whose art this is, but I dug it.

Probably about 200-300 people showed up over the course of the evening.

NEW ART // “Zipperface” + an art show “Beyond Recognition”

Monday, July 27th, 2009

Glaaargh, hellishly busy still, and in addition to the usual business, I’m preparing to move to a different apartment in a week, and also for my nephew’s visit to SF over this next week. BUT: some news…

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 13th
Space Gallery
1141 Polk St, San Francisco CA

I have several pieces in the “Beyond Recognition” show, and the opening is this coming Friday. I will also more than likely be selling prints while there. Come check it out and say hi!

Also, I made a new illustrated-photography piece, “Zipperface”, featuring my favorite muse again (Dawon):

Click the image for a larger view.

This is a disturbing scene that came to me in a dream back in 2000, in which a girl approaches me, pulls a zipper from her forehead, and starts to expose her skull, before I am jarred awake. Yikers. This is a first in a series of illustrated-photography based on dreams – hopefully to accompany a graphic novel of dreams (if my schedule ever permits it)

More soon hopefully. My next creative projects after settling into my new place (old place technically, as I’m moving back into the apartment I spent my first 4 years in SF in), will be focusing on Electric Ant issue 2 design and illustration, and adapting Maruo’s Panorama Island into English. (yayyyy!!!)  You’ll have to wait a while for that second one to come out, but it’ll be worth it. Ryan and I are salivating over working on it, and are treating it with the care and respect it deserves!

C-Pop pix from Metromix

Monday, December 15th, 2008

Sleeeepy… about to go to bed, but I thought I’d mention that Detroit Free Press / Metromix photographer Tracey Nawrot documented the CPOPpor2nity show on Metromix. See the pictures here. (It’s funny, I’m actually on the front page of the gallery, and the site. *egostroke*)

The show was a lot of fun. I saw a nice selection of art from some talented people, and met some cool folks.

Still wading through pics from my road trip. I did a lot of shooting en route… but the documentary work has kept me a bit busy since I got to Michigan. I’ll have more fashion stuff for you kids to check out soon, and then some new illustrated-photography!

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008

So I’m back in Michigan, and I’ve been busy. Doing photography for a documentary about a car designer / fine artist, and also getting ready for a show…

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 13th  @ 7pm
C-Pop Gallery
4160 Woodward Ave, Detroit MI

I have three pieces in C-Pop Gallery’s show, “©POPpor2nity”.  This is an honor for me, as I used to frequent C-Pop as a high schooler / college student, and it inspired me quite a bit, growing up. It was thanks to C-Pop, that I got into Yumiko Kayukawa, Shepard Fairey, Niagara, AWOL, Mark Ryden, and many others.

The opening is on December 13th, but the show itself goes on until January 31st, so be sure to check it out if you’re in the area!

Anyway, more later. busy busy busy…

road trip

Saturday, November 15th, 2008

So thing have definitely changed since my last post.  The place I was going to stay at in LA fell through, and I also ran into money problems. All this happened in the last week. Yayyyy… Thus, I have to put off the LA move for a couple months. My lease is up in SF though, so I’m moving back to Michigan probably until February ‘09… to save up some cash and help my parents get their house ready to sell.

I’m pretty bummed about it, so I gave myself a consolation prize. Instead of heading straight back to MI, I’m going on a leisurely road trip, visiting friends and family, and doing a bunch of photo shoots on the way. So far, I’ve hit up Ventura CA, Los Angeles CA, Las Vegas NV and Salt Lake City UT. Tomorrow – after a shoot in the salt flats – I’m heading to Denver CO to visit my uncle, then on to Omaha NE, then Chicago IL, then finally Michigan.  I’ve already done 5 photo shoots since I left, and have a few more scheduled, so I’ll have a bunch of new stuff to showcase over the next few weeks…

The trip has been fun… two bad things happened though…. First, I got a call from the data recovery lab. They can’t salvage anything on my hard drive. Thus, I’m basically going to have to start over. I can recover some of my work through friends, and through hi-res scanning of prints, but some is lost forever, except for the small-size images you can see on this site. Thus, I’m going to have to put off the “buy prints” section of my site a little longer, until I get new stuff to sell.  I had a couple weeks now to prepare myself for this outcome, but I thought they’d be able to recover at least some of the data, since the hard drive was at least responding somewhat. Shows me to trust a hard drive (even though it was only a year old).

The other bad thing that happened was tonight in Salt Lake City, some guy came up too fast behind me at a stop light and rear-ended me…

This picture doesn’t quite do it justice. I’m going to have to get a new rear bumper and hatch door. Sucks man… I just got the car last year, and it’s my baby.  This picture pretty much sums up the trip so far.

Anyway, off to sleep. I have a very bizarre, interesting shoot in the flats tomorrow, which will later be turning into an illustrated-photo piece. It’s an idea I’ve been wanting to shoot for two years now… More updates later!
